Job Description
				  QUALIFICATIONS 
 
 Education 
-  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing 
-  Graduate of a formal perioperative nursing course or documented on-the-job training 
 
 Experience/Skills 
-  Preferably possesses at least one year experience in a clinical setting 
-  Possesses circulating and/or scrubbing duty experience 
-  Performs nursing intervention using the nursing process and incorporating current clinical knowledge with established nursing practice 
-  Continuously acquires surgery skills through clinical experience, on-the-job training, inservice, and continuing education 
-  Proficiently reads, writes, and understands English 
-  Accurately reads fine print, supply labels, patient identification bracelets, the surgical schedule, and policies and procedures 
-  Accurately hears and follows verbal instructions 
-  Pushes and pulls heavy objects such as gurneys, patient beds and OR beds 
-  Lifts patients, heavy boxes weighing up to 40 pounds, and instrument sets weighing up to 20 pounds 
 
 Required Licenses/Certifications 
-  Registered Nurse licensed to practice in the state of Indiana 
-  CPR 
-  ACLS 
 
 Working Conditions 
-  Works in an air-conditioned environment with a temperature of 65ºF-72ºF and humidity of 45%-55%
-  Works in temperatures up to 85ºF-90ºF when assigned to assist with pediatric cases 
-  Wears hospital-provided scrub attire while on duty 
-  Works in an environment with the potential for cuts, bruises, muscle strains, and exposure to contagious diseases via blood and body fluids 
-  Works in an environment with the potential for exposure to anesthetic waste gases, harsh disinfectants, sterilizing agents, high steam pressure, and radiologic factors

 RN Duties – Assessment/Planning 
-  Assesses the physiological health status of the patient on admission to the operating room and performs an ongoing assessment of the patient’s physiological health status during the intraoperative period 
-  Assesses psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual status on admission to the operating room 
-  Identifies nursing diagnoses appropriate to the intraoperative and postoperative period 
-  Plans care based on the patient’s problems/needs in the assessment 
-  Plans and coordinates patient care perioperatively to allow for patient comfort by efficient use of down time; using surgeon’s preference cards; and by coordinating activities of other disciplines to implement individual plan of care 
-  Initiates discharge planning for local and endoscopy patients which includes patient and family instruction/teaching, resource referral 
 
 RN Duties – Implementation/Evaluation 
-  Implements perioperative nursing care according to an established plan of care and operating room policies and procedures 
-  Supervises perioperative nursing associates and assistants assigned to perform the actions necessary to accomplish the identified goals 
-  Scrubs and/or circulates simple as well as complex surgical and endoscopy procedures 
-  Evaluates the effectiveness of the care provided 
-  Communicates and perioperative nursing care 
-  Designs, implements, and evaluates systems to improve the quality of perioperative nursing patient care 
-  Assumes on-call for department 
 
 RN Duties – Post Anesthesia Recovery 
-  Demonstrates effective airway management; frequently monitors respiratory adequacy and intervenes appropriately 
-  Monitors cardiac system of post-op patient 
-  Identifies arrhythmias and evidence of shock, intervening appropriately when necessary 
-  Utilizes PAR scoring system to determine patient status toward post-anesthesia recovery 
-  Demonstrates a knowledge of proper documentation and charging procedures (e.g. vital signs, I&O, patient care record)
