The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) welcomes applications for an Environmental Scientist to join a small team that is focused on coastal salmonid restoration, recovery, and management. This position will coordinate, collaborate, and provide support to CDFW regional counterparts and federal and non-governmental partners working on salmonid conservation along the California coast. The work is currently focused on Coho Salmon recovery in streams and rivers spanning from Santa Cruz County in the south to the Oregon border in the north. The incumbent to this job will be a member of the CDFW North Coast Salmon Project, which works with diverse partners to establish restoration priorities on a watershed-specific basis.
This position located in the West Sacramento Office at 1010 Riverside Parkway, West Sacramento, CA 95605. While most of the work of this position is conducted from an office setting, the incumbent in this position will also participate in site visits to coastal watersheds, which may include some overnight travel. Site visits often provide opportunity to observe restoration techniques being applied in coastal streams to improve ecosystem function, and which ultimately benefit salmon and steelhead. The work of this position may involve some in-state travel for meetings, workshops, conference and hearings. Ability to use a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time, which may involve walking or standing for brief periods to access files, references, and other program materials. Attend meetings and internal and external training. In addition to working with Regional staff, interact with headquarters staff and members of the public via e-mail, telephone and through virtual meetings. Possession of valid CA driver’s license. Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and wade in streams. Occasional overnight travel to reach some project locations may be required.
Ability to use a computer keyboard and Microsoft Office software for extended periods. Attendance at internal and external training. Wear formal and informal uniform on occasion.
The position requires a valid California Drivers License (CDL). Travel and field work is required on occasion and may include night, weekend, or holiday work.This position requires the possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. 1. Education in biological or environmental science, preferably with coursework in fishery biology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology, population dynamics, biostatistics, and conservation policy. 2. Strong interest in and knowledge of the structure and function of California coastal watersheds, especially as related to salmonid production. 3. High level of understanding and appreciation for balancing fish conservation objectives with fishery management. 3. Strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work both independently and in team settings, and a high desire to engage in collaboration. 4. Strong analytical skills, including competence with spreadsheets, databases, and statistical and modeling software. 5.
